According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the following statistics provide a snapshot of the mental health crisis in the United States:
• 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness in a given year
• 1 in 20 U.S. adults experiences serious mental illness in a given year
• 1 in 5 U.S. youth aged 13-18 experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life
• Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for the loss of nearly 45,000 American lives each year
• Nearly 20% of youth aged 13-18 have experienced a severe mental disorder at some point during their life
• Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year
• Only 53% of children aged 8-15 received mental health services in the past year
• 60% of adults in the U.S. with a mental illness did not receive mental health services in the past year
• African Americans and Hispanic Americans used mental health services at about one-half the rate of Caucasian Americans in the past year
• African Americans are more likely to report unmet need for mental health care than non-Hispanic whites
• Over half of students age 14 and older with a mental illness drop out of school
